Bulb and puddle route

The route starts from the TOP Katwijk-Zuidduinen and goes through the Dune and Bulb Region.

The region is characterized by wide sand ridges (remains of dunes excavated between 1650 and 1955 for sand extraction for urban development), rural areas with bulb fields, alternated with strips of meadow and shielded from the North Sea by extensive dunes. During the flowering of the flower bulbs, this region is one of the most colorful in the world. After the crocuses, an overwhelming bloom of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths begins at the end of March and continues until May. In late summer, gladioli, dahlias, carnations and asters provide a second attraction.

Katwijk is a hospitable seaside resort with its own character. Many visitors return every year because of the friendly atmosphere and the varied nature. You can enjoy walking and cycling on the beach and through the extensive dunes. In Katwijk, Rijnsburg and Valkenburg you will still find characteristic village centers and old-fashioned hospitality. Katwijk is also surprising! With cozy restaurants and nice weekly and tourist markets. Katwijk is also the ideal base for a visit to the rest of the Bulb Region.

The Berkheide dune area south of Katwijk is locally known as 'the Zuidduinen'. This relatively unknown, but interesting nature reserve has the following main functions: nature protection, drinking water supply, coastal defense and recreation. The cycle path through the Zuidduinen follows the coastline to Wassenaar. The many hiking trails invite you to discover the hinterland of the beautiful dune landscape.

Tip 1: Flag dune
A breathtaking view over dunes and sea at 37 meters above sea level. The highest natural viewpoint in South Holland. With an observation bunker from the Second World War on top. Enjoy the view!

Tip 2: The Andreas Church
The Andreas Church, named after the patron saint of fishermen, is the oldest monument in Katwijk aan Zee (1461). The church burned down in 1572 and was never fully restored. In the seventeenth century, many houses around it were swallowed up by the sea. Since then, the"White Church\\\" has determined the image of the boulevard.

Tip 3: Tower Abbey Church (Grote Kerk)
In the twelfth century, Petronella of Saxony, Countess of Holland, founded the abbey church for noble nuns. The church was destroyed around 1570, but the south tower from 1183 was preserved. Next to the church is the statue of Count Floris V and the Mausoleum.

Tip 4: The Valkenburgs Pontje
The Valkenburgs Pontje, for cyclists and pedestrians, sails between Valkenburg and Rijnsburg. It is the oldest existing ferry connection in our country. Sailing times: Mon-Fri 7.30am-5.30pm, Sat-Sun and public holidays 9am-5pm.

Tip 5: Panbos
The Pan van Persijn, Panbos for short, is a popular walking and playing forest for young and old! With two walking routes, a deer park, goat pasture, playground equipment and part of the Atlantic Wall from the Second World War. Address: Wassenaarseweg 152, 2223 LA Katwijk
