Tour Hidden Village and De Essenburgh

In the woods near Vierhouten you cycle past listening point L59: The hidden village. Here you will hear the dramatic story about the Hidden Village: a secret village in hiding that was founded in the woods in the spring of 1943. Three huts have been recreated, and some remains of the original huts can still be found. Gortel is a charming hamlet with well-preserved old farms. You cycle back past De Essenburgh Castle, a fairytale castle from 1652 between forests and vast heathlands. The estate is laid out in the style of English landscape gardens and there is a monastery building of the Premonstratensians. In 1992 a second monastery was built for the female Premonstratensians.
