Tour of Angstel from the Vinkeveense Plassen

Your walking route starts at Apollo Hotel Vinkeveen-Amsterdam. They were created by the extraction of peat. The elongated islands that you can still see today are legakkers: drying fields for wet peat. The drainage holes between them became larger due to erosion, thus creating the puddles. In Baambrugge it seems as if you have driven back in time. From Baambrugge you walk along the meandering river Angstel to Loenersloot. Along this part of the route there is one monumental building after another, ranging from thatched farmhouses and churches to the thirteenth-century Loenersloot Castle. In between you look out over a vast Dutch polder landscape.
