Tour of Engbertsdijksvenen: past bird watching hut and lakes

Your walk starts with a cup of coffee at Bistro Festa. From here you walk through Sibculo along the Spartelvijver, another recreational pond. These and other lakes in the area were created by sand excavations. Then you walk to the Engbertsdijksvenen, which consists of peat, heath and fens. One of the few raised bog areas left in our country, a must see! It is a remnant of the large peat swamp that once covered the northeast of the Netherlands. The peat area developed after the last ice age, more than ten thousand years ago. From Birdwatching Hut De Pluus you look out over a large lake where migratory birds can often be seen. You can spot skylarks, meadow pipits, the gray shrike and hen harrier.
