Engbertsdijksvenen tour: along birdwatching hut and lakes

Your walk starts with a cup of coffee at Bistro Festa. From here you walk through Sibculo along the Spartelvijver, another recreational pond. This and other lakes in the area were created by sand excavations. Then you walk to the Engbertsdijksvenen, which consists of peat, heath and fens. One of the few raised bog areas that our country still has, a must see! It is a remnant of the large peat bog that once covered the northeast of the Netherlands. The peat area developed after the last ice age, more than ten thousand years ago. From the birdwatching hut de Pluus you look out over a large pond where migratory birds can often be seen. You can spot skylarks, meadow pipits, the shrike and the hen harrier.
