Zuiderzee Route
Zuiderzee friend and enemy of the residents in this area.
Revenues from fishing were accompanied by losses
by floods. The centuries-long struggle that the inhabitants
of the Veluwe against the Zuiderzee is today
still clearly visible. Particularly in one of the oldest polders
of the Netherlands, Arkemheen, arose over the years
special landscape. Rifts of the tidal currents of the
Zuiderzee caused winding ditches. This original
The parcellation structure is still visible. Moreover
led to dike breaches, the last of which took place in 1916,
gullies and reed marshes.
