This route takes you through the special nature and cultural history of Flemish Limburg. You cycle through the Valley of the Grote Beek, which includes the Wet Triangle. This nature reserve is completely enclosed by diked (former) railways, so that it can no longer be drained. This unique situation has meant that the area consists of all kinds of wet biotopes.
In Leopoldsburg you experience that typical Limburg geniality. And the Burgundian slant: there is always a terrace where a delicious fresh Limburg pie is served. Feel free to try one of the city specialties, such as the Kampse Soldatenkoek. The cake is baked according to a secret recipe and is available at three Kampse bakeries: Bakkerij Verpoorten, Bakker Kris and Jacques.
The residents of Leopold are also no strangers to humor. Since 2007 you will find a real Walk of Fame in Leopoldsburg, a joke to Hollywood. Because relatively many BV\\\'ers - or well-known Flemish people - grew up in Leopoldsburg, they were given their own star in the pavement here.
But Leopoldsburg is mainly known for its military history. In 1835, King Leopold I established a barracks here as a defense against the Netherlands. You can still see that military history in various places in the city, such as in Museum Kamp van Beverlo, which is located in the former military hospital from 1850. You can also walk a number of nostalgic routes through the city that tell you more about the history of Leopoldsburg
From Leopoldsburg you drive through the landscape criss-crossed with ditches, streams and waterways to the Dessel-Kwaadmechelen Canal. You cycle for miles along the green and rural banks of this canal. It's wonderful to pedal, the kilometers seem to pass by themselves as you drive past the rippling water and the sometimes beautiful old houses.
