Description
Cycle through the Noordoostpolder and discover the youngest province in the Netherlands. The polder area you cycle through is wonderfully quiet with panoramic views. That tranquility alternates with picturesque pictures such as Ens and Marknesse.
Authentic Vollenhove
The starting point of the route is in Vollenhove. This Overijssel town was already mentioned in 944, but at that time no city could yet be found at this location. The area then consisted of a forest. The area was reclaimed in the 11th century and Vollenhove received city rights in 1354. In the first half of the 15th century the city flourished due to sturgeon fishing. This long history can still be seen in the historic buildings in the city. For example, take a look at the Sint Niklaas Church from 1500 or the Oldruitenborgh manor from 1524.
