The Keukenhof Flower Route

The Keukenhof Flower Route starts at TOP Lisse, at the former station. This is now set up as a restaurant. In the spring - from the end of March to the end of May - you can visit Keukenhof and see the tulips, crocuses and daffodils in full bloom on the bulb skins between Lisse and Noordwijkerhout. Throughout the year you can enjoy the polder landscape, forests and extensive dunes on the coast in the area around the village of Lisse.

The bulb fields with their straight ditches and high dune roads alternate with green avenues and old estates. The plots form a beautiful colorful patchwork in spring. In addition to the many bulb fields, the varied landscape, the canals and ditches, the monuments and the charming villages make the route a true experience.

In addition to the Keukenhof flower exhibition and the bulb fields, the estate with Keukenhof castle is also worth a visit. The castle was built in 1640 as a residence by a commander of the Dutch East India Company. Later, around 1860, it was converted into a neo-Gothic castle with different types of towers. Furniture from all kinds of years and style periods can be found in the various salons. The beautiful interior, which has been preserved in its entirety, shows how the nobility used to live.

Lisse and surroundings
The village of Lisse originated on the beach wall, between the dunes and the Haarlemmermeer. The oldest building in Lisse is the fortified residential tower 't Huys Dever, built around 1375. In the 17th and 18th centuries, wealthy city dwellers established beautiful country estates here. The inner dunes and almost all estates have been excavated for sand extraction and flower bulb cultivation. The Keukenhof estate is an exception, where the Keukenhof flower exhibition is located on part of the estate. The history of flower bulb culture can be seen in Museum De Zwarte Tulp. The village of Lisse has a pleasant catering square, 't Vierkant with a shopping center nearby, where you can find various authentic shops.

Tip 1: Keukenhof Estate
The atmospheric and wooded Estate Keukenhof is located in the middle of the Bollen stitch. A visit to the estate with the castle, the gardens, art exhibitions, catering, petting zoo and nature and environmental visitor center is definitely recommended!

The square is located on Heereweg at house numbers 220-240.

Tip 5: 't Huys Dever
't Huys Dever was built shortly after 1375 by Reinier Dever or d'Ever, from Dutch nobles. The building is a so-called residential tower or keep, as there have been many in the coastal region. Except for Dever, they have all disappeared.
