The Vulkanradweg guarantees wonderful cycling in the Vogelsberg, the largest area of volcanic origin in Central Europe, in the middle of Hessen. Over a length of 94 kilometres, the well-signposted Vulkanradweg runs largely over the former railway line of the Oberwaldbahn, over the mountains of the Vogelsberg and through the Wetterau.
Fine asphalt and a minimum gradient of 3% offer optimal conditions for recreational cyclists with a normal condition and for families with children. The cycle route connects the Fulda-Radweg R1 near Schlitz with the Limesradweg near Altenstadt. Cyclists and inline skaters can discover all facets of the forest and meadow landscape here. The highest point of the Vulkanradweg is the former station of Hartmannshain at an altitude of approximately 580 m above sea level. The Hoherodskopfsteig branches off here, as does the Vogelsberger Südbahnradweg to Birstein and Wächtersbach. At the end of the cycle route you can continue your route via the German Limesradweg.
Nature, villages and towns are experienced from a perspective that train travelers have known until the mid-1970s. Along the route, the cyclist will various cultural attractions. It passes Schloss Eisenbach, the volcanic thermal baths Herbstein and the cultural history museum in the gatehouse of Schloss Gedern. Visit the Cast Iron Museum in Hirzenhain, Lißberg Castle, the Lißberg Musical Instrument Museum or the Glauberg Archaeological Park with a reconstructed Celtic burial mound and much more. Along the Vulkanradweg you can relax at a range of catering establishments, from traditional restaurants to cozy terraces directly along the route or in the vicinity. If you prefer to stay a little longer, take advantage of the many accommodation options. Be a guest in a hotel, guest house, holiday park or a real castle!
From May to October, bicycle buses run along the route on weekends and public holidays for individual tours or to take you back to your starting point.
