Tour of Steenwijk, Holtingerveld and Wilhelminaoord

First you cycle through the woods of the Holtingerveld. Here and there, craters in the ground bear witness to a bombing of a German airfield that was located here during the Second World War. Then you cycle through Steenwijk. This old, former fortified town has more than 60 national monuments, including De Markt and the city canals. Steenwijk was located in a strategic location during the Eighty Years' War, which meant that there were regular battles. This river is located in a valley formed by a glacier tongue. The valley became overgrown with raised peat, which was then removed during the peat excavations. At Wilhelminaoord you will experience a special episode in Dutch history: that of former nineteenth-century mining colonies.
