Tour of Steenwijk, Holtingerveld and Wilhelminaoord

First you cycle through the woods of the Holtingerveld. Here and there, craters in the ground bear witness to a bombing raid on a German airfield that was located here in World War II. Then you cycle through Steenwijk. This old, former fortified town has more than 60 national monuments, including De Markt and the city canals. Steenwijk was strategically located during the Eighty Years' War, which meant that battles were regularly fought. After a stopover at Restaurant Het Hof van Holland you cycle to De Lende. This river is located in a valley formed by a glacier tongue. The valley became overgrown with raised bog, which was then removed again during the peat excavations. At Wilhelminaoord you will experience a special episode in Dutch history: that of former nineteenth-century mining colonies.
