Description
Explore the cycling charm of Walcheren and get to know the Oranjezon nature reserve. Dunes, dune grasslands, shrubs, deciduous forest and coniferous forest cover an area of 400 hectares. Nature is given free rein here and the trees that were sawed off by the Germans during WWII have been given whimsical, bizarre shapes. Dense shrublands, water and forests have a rich flora and fauna. If you're lucky and keep quiet, you might even see fallow deer! Birds like to breed there and special plants such as orchids and parnassia bloom in the more open (dune) landscapes.
From'city center parking lot\\\' you cycle to the De Hoop mill (hull/remains) and cycle to the first sight of the tour. In Sint Laurens you pass the former windmill De Hoop (hull/remains) from 1721. The mill caught fire in 1943 because the catch had overheated. Since then, only the hull has remained standing. Because much of the inventory is still intact, there are serious plans to restore the mill.
Duinbeek country estate then presents itself. The history of this impressive estate dates back to before 1350. The house is privately occupied but is clearly visible from the public road.
