Crushing shell paths under your soles: Ameland is the island par excellence to explore on foot. Numerous hiking trails wind through the salt marshes, along the wax, through the villages and dunes and over the beach. And because nature is so versatile on the island, every season has its charm.
The cozy village of Nes is one of the largest villages on the Wadden Island. In the village you will find beautiful old commander's houses, but also nice shops and cozy restaurants. Through a strict restoration policy, Nes has managed to retain its unique charm. One of the oldest houses in Nes dates from 1625, you will find it in the Rixt van Doniastraat. Also very special is the detached church tower from 1723, this tower is not connected to a church but served as a sea beacon.
Via Briksduinen you walk to the Zwanewaterduinen, a very varied route. In the Briksduinen you have to climb occasionally, but there are plenty of benches to rest - with magnificent views over the Hagendoornveld with the large (but harmless) red and white spotted Herford cows. Many special birds and flowers can be seen in the Zwanewater dunes. Here nature really seems to do its best for you!
