Cycling along the Reitdiep

Experience how beautiful nature can be in the Groningen area with this varied route around the city. The many maars and canals around Groningen show that the city has a lot to do with water. On this route you will learn more about the history of Groningen and the surrounding water.

The former connection to the Wadden Sea
The starting point of this route is in the bustling heart of Groningen at VVV Groningen. From here you can cycle into the vast, peaceful countryside within a few minutes. A huge contrast and yet this goes together perfectly in and around Groningen. Part of this route takes you along the Reitdiep, the former connection to the Wadden Sea.

Old mound villages
During this tour you will also cycle through small mound villages, each with their own church. You can visit all these churches by picking up the key to the church at the key address stated at the church. Feerwerd was also originally a mound village. The area in which this village is located was diked in the early Middle Ages, resulting in Feerwerd being located on a peninsula together with Ezinge and Garnwerd.

Aduard Abbey
At the end of the route you cycle through Aduard. In this village you will find, among other things, the Monastery Museum. Aduard Abbey used to have a lot of influence on the village and the surrounding area where the monks lived. Traces of this influence can still be found far and wide around the village.
