Description
This route takes you through one of the oldest areas of Flevoland: the former island of Schokland. Get on your bike and take a varied trip over the dike along the water with a view of the old land, over the Oud-Kraggenburg mound and along the vast fields between the Scottish Highlanders to UNESCO World Heritage Schokland.
From island to mainland
The cozy village of Kraggenburg is the starting point of this route. From here you cycle through the polder to Ens and further to the edge of the Ketelmeer. Then you continue along the fields back to Kraggeburg. You will cycle over ancient land of Schokland. In the past, all inhabitants of Schokland moved to the mainland because there were no longer any means of existence on the island. What remained was an uninhabited island. Later, Schokland became part of the reclaimed land of Flevoland and now you can just cycle there. Only the long row of trees still betrays the border of the former island.
Old Kraggenburg
You can also enjoy the peace and quiet in this area that has only a few inhabitants. Keep your eyes open to spot all kinds of birds and other animals that live here. After your bike ride you can take a look at Kraggenburg. You will find here, among other things, the old light keeper's house Oud Kraggenburg.
