Description

This walk shows you the stately and green character of Arnhem. You walk across Landgoed Zijpendaal and through the Sonsbeekpark. You will also pass the Dutch Open Air Museum. Here you get a picture of life in the Netherlands during the last centuries. Everyday life is illustrated here by, among other things, relocated original buildings such as old farms, windmills and a steam dairy. The museum is working on the presentation of the Canon of the Netherlands. A visit to this museum is therefore an enrichment of your already beautiful route. The route starts and ends near Landgoed Zijpendaal. The country house and park were laid out around 1764 by an Arnhem family of regents. In 1884 the castle was renovated and equipped with a tower that resembles the tower of Kasteel Ruurlo. The family lived on the estate until 1926. From the estate you can walk to Sonsbeek Park, one of the most famous and most beautiful parks in the Netherlands. The hilly park is mostly wooded with an ancient beech forest. You will see a great diversity of trees and plants, ponds and fountains. On sunny days, the people of Arnhem stroll along the paths as usual. Young and old play on the grass or lie quietly reading a book. On the edge of the park you will pass the former Begijnenmolen, which dates from the thirteenth century. Today this building houses the Dutch Water Museum. Nearby is the White Water Mill. This corn mill probably dates from the end of the fifteenth century and is the only working water mill of the nine that once stood along the Sint Jansbeek. The Visitor Center Sonsbeek is located in the barn of the mill. The route leads you further through the city. You pass through neighborhoods such as Alteveer and Monnikenhuizen where the Vitesse stadium once stood. You can also walk along the wooded edge of the old Park Klarenbeek. You walk here wonderfully quietly between the oaks, beech, hazel and honeysuckle. At the Open Air Museum you will find another listening point from the Liberation Route: L28, A roof over your head. Here you can hear the story about the shelter of Arnhemmers in the Open Air Museum during the battle in the autumn of 1944.
