Round Schaijk and Herperduin

This walk takes you from Eetcafé De Notaris in Schaijk through Herpen and the rural surroundings of these North Brabant villages. It is wonderful to walk here in a quiet landscape of small woods and fields and grasslands. And of course Herperduin, or the Herpse Bossen. Herpen has been threatened for centuries by the Maas, which makes a few sharp bends a little further on. The area flooded regularly. To prevent this, a number of dikes were built around Herpen, such as the Erfdijk, which is first mentioned in 1322. Anyone who had a yard along this dike was obliged to contribute to the maintenance of the dike. You will come across this ancient Erfdijk at junction 1. Back in Schaijk you will see the Sint Antonius Abt church, which originally dates from 1754.
