Description

Cross the border and discover some nice sights on Belgian territory, while you also discover the rich cultural history in the border region on your own soil. The starting point for this cycling tour is Hoeve De Witte Olifant Noorbeek, where you can rent cozy cottages and come home after your trip and relax in the leafy surroundings. Route 183718 also starts and ends here, so that with an overnight stay you can make two beautiful bike rides and really have a weekend away. Hoeve de Witte Olifant Noorbeek is an official free charging point with a picnic area.

En route you pass the farm of the same name in Libeek, the oldest parts of which also date from the thirteenth century. Once there was a knightly house on this site, but after the castle changed owner in the sixteenth century, the fortress was gradually converted into a leasehold farm. Libeek has the largest Limburg farm that surrounds a square courtyard and the house, which is built from marlstone, was built and improved in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The Meschermolen is also beautiful. The upper stroke watermill from 1699 was used as a corn mill and it is the first watermill on the Voer brook. The mill has served for centuries and was only shut down in the early 1950s. The mill was then no longer needed, because an electric hammer mill was built in the village. Between 1996 and 1998 the mill was restored and made ready to grind again. The mill can be viewed by appointment.

Another watermill is the Breustermolen, also known as the Richelle Mill. This mill, which was built in the wing of a farm, also ground on the Voer. The first mention of this water mill goes back to 1221, when it was used as a ban mill of the seigniory of Breust. In 1791 a major renovation took place, in which the mill owes its gable stone with that year.

Eijsden Castle, the next point of interest, is in the top of the Dutch Unesco Monuments. The historic castle consists of two right-angled wings connected by a corner tower. There is a gatehouse with a forecourt and a park that is freely accessible.

And while you're in the area, learn about the area's history and antiquity at the Musée de la Montagne Saint Pière. The Musée du Silex, located in the cellars of the Eben-Ezer tower, will teach you more about the interesting flint.
