In the wooded area of Swalmen in Limburg, it is wonderfully quiet for a walk. This route takes you through the woods of the Bisschopskamp and the Swalmdal. You will also pass Castle Hillenraad.
Swalmdal
In the Netherlands, the Swalm still has its natural meandering course. Walking through the stream valley with its moist grasslands and marsh forests, you seem to have ended up in a paradise from earlier times. In the spring you can admire the yellow blooms of the marsh marigolds here. Later, the bitter field cress drapes a beautiful white veil over the bottom. When you come out of the valley, you can see the wooded steep edge of the German Elmpter Wald on the horizon.
Bishop's Camp
The Bisschopskamp is a wonderfully varied nature reserve of deciduous and coniferous forests. Castle Hillenraad is a square moated castle that originally dates from the fourteenth century. During the Eighty Years' War, William of Orange led the siege of Roermond from this castle. The cottage is privately owned.
