It is wonderfully peaceful to walk in the wooded area of Swalmen in Limburg. This route takes you through the forests of the Bisschopskamp and the Swalmdal. You will also pass Hillenraad Castle.
Swalmdal
The Swalm still has its natural meandering course in the Netherlands. Walking through the stream valley with its moist grasslands and swamp forests, you seem to have ended up in a paradise from earlier times. In the spring you can admire the yellow blooms of the marsh marigolds here. Later, the bitter field cherry drapes a beautiful white veil over the ground. When you come out of the valley, you will see the wooded escarpment of the German Elmpter Wald on the horizon.
Bishop Camp
De Bisschopskamp is a wonderfully varied nature reserve of deciduous and coniferous forests. Hillenraad Castle is a square moated castle that originally dates from the fourteenth century. During the Eighty Years' War, William of Orange led the siege of Roermond from this castle. The property is privately owned.
