Description

De Putten is a nature reserve located just behind the Hondsbossche Zeewering and consists largely of water. De Putten was constructed in 1950. Shallow pools were dug to extract clay for strengthening the dike. A number of islands have been created to make it attractive to birds. The nature reserve is managed by Natuurmonumenten and is not accessible to the public. The Wells are especially important as a resting place and for collecting food for migrating birds in spring and autumn. Around the month of May you can mainly count on many different birds, such as: o bar-tailed godwit o dunlin o black horseman o redshank But also ducks such as the mallard, tufted duck, pintail, widgeon and gadwall, and also birds of prey such as the marsh harrier, the kestrel and the buzzard. During migration time, many ducks and geese come here to rest and look for food. During the breeding season, very different guests can be seen. Black-headed gulls, common terns and avocets breed on the islands. The place Camperduin already exists in the 10th century as Campthorpa. Later names are Camp (1639) and Camper Duyn (1745). The first place name would indicate a daughter settlement (\\'thorpa\\'). A second settlement of the monastery of Egmond, the Sint-Adelbertabdij, is being considered. That is why'camp\\\' is also thought to be derived from the Latin word campus, which means'field\\\'. The place name would then mean: daughter settlement near a field. Later it became an independent village. Camperdown is a town in Australia and owes its name to the Battle of Camperduin. The name was given by William Bligh, an officer in the English navy, who was given a territory of 1 km2 and founded the Australian village on it.
