Straight through Greyloke in Anzegem

The West Flemish hills are ideal for beautiful bike rides, but also for unforgettable walks. The peace and quiet of yesteryear still reign in this rural area. In the charming villages you will experience the hospitality and conviviality that Belgium is known for. This easy route takes you through Gijzelbrechtegem, a sub-municipality of Anzegem. This ribbon village is popularly known as Greyloke and is located between the rivers Leie and Scheldt. You walk alternately through the old village and the surrounding agricultural hills. During the route you make two climbs where you overcome a height difference of 30 to 40 meters. From the tops of the hills you have beautiful views over the Leie valley and the Scheldt valley. In this small village you will pass some monumental buildings. In the Gijzelbrechtegemstraat, for example, is the neo-Gothic Sint-Mattheuskerk from 1859. The church still contains a confessional from the second half of the eighteenth century and several paintings from the nineteenth century. The statue of Saint Anthony dates from the sixteenth century. The parsonage is also worth stopping for a moment. In the Blaarhoekstraat, the village school is located at number 4, a former convent house from 1900. At number 29 you can see one of the buildings that date from the end of the nineteenth century. You can see a few more in Holdestraat (number 8) and Bouvelostraat (number 45). On the corner of Bouvelostraat and Dolderstraat you will pass a characteristic chapel that is about a century old. You can sit here on a bench to enjoy the beautiful rural surroundings and a picnic. Who knows, you might even get talking to a local resident who can tell you something about the legend of the Witches of Greylocke.
