The IJsselmeer polders were constructed as agricultural lands to boost the agricultural industry. But after the Second World War, the Dutch population in Amsterdam grew so fast that more space was needed to accommodate all these people. This is how Zuidweststad was born, the city that was called'Almere\\\' in the 1970s. Almere will go down in Dutch history as the fastest growing cities in our country. Originally, the city had several centers, but as the different centers grew together, this structure was lost. Since the 1990s, more and more exclusive, striking homes have been built, so you will be amazed by the sights in Almere. One of the most striking buildings is that of the Kunstencentrum de Kunstlinie, which was opened by Queen Beatrix in 2007, but you can also see unique examples of architecture in the Regenboogbuurt. In addition to a nice route through the built-up area, you also cycle through the deserted landscape between the meadows and along the Oostvaardersplassen. This is a unique swampy nature reserve where you will encounter large herds of game and hundreds of bird species. Don't be alarmed if you come face to face with a bull, horse or red deer among the lawns or reeds, while the cormorants skim over the lakes on the hunt for fresh fish.
