This route to the Twiske is not without risks. You cycle through a recreational area that offers temptations on all sides. Beaches, endless playing fields and a lovely lake for swimming and sailing. Then try to stay firmly in the saddle... Fortunately, the Twiske also offers an overwhelming and varied nature that certainly offers the necessary distraction during the 39 kilometers that have to be cycled: eye-catching meadows, flowery meadows, marshlands, forest areas and wide reed beds. You start this route behind the Central Station in Amsterdam where you first go sailing for a while. From the Buiksloterweg ferry to Amsterdam-Noord you have a beautiful view of the film institute Eye and the cozy Tolhuistuin that opened its doors in September 2014. On the other side, the landscape becomes quite green after just fifteen minutes of cycling and once past Landsmeer you imagine yourself in a nature reserve that is unparalleled. From the dike that literally embraces the Twiske, you have a great view. The Twiske itself is an old peat meadow area that was drained in the forties and fifties and still has its own (particularly clean!) water management to this day. The Stootersplas in the middle was created when twelve million cubic meters of sand had to be extracted for the construction of the Coentunnel.
