Description

The Klederdrachtroute is a varied bike ride where you cycle through a typical Dutch landscape with bees and flowers and overwhelming views. And you become familiar with some very old Dutch clothing styles. For example, on the Marken peninsula, one of the few places in the Netherlands where traditional clothing is still worn only on special occasions. Because this former island was isolated from the mainland for a long time, new styles only gradually penetrated here. Only since the arrival of the dike that connected the island to Monnickendam in 1957 did this change. Then tradition gave way to race for fashion and comfort. Only a single elderly resident of Marken still proudly wears traditional clothing every day, although guides regularly brighten up the street scene with their traditional clothing during their tours. Fortunately, because the Marker costume is beautiful. Brightly colored and richly decorated with handmade embroidery and still based on the fashion of the sixteenth century. Another place where the traditional costume still adorns the streetscape is Volendam. And with its white hoods (hul) and red coral necklaces, the Volendam regional costume is the most famous. A direct result of the artists' colony that settled here around 1900. Painters loved those local types in their colorful clothes and immortalized them on their canvas. You can find everything about that past at Art Hotel Spaander. Anyone who would like to be immortalized in this folklore can visit one of the many souvenir and photo shops. There you can have a portrait made in style.
