Historic Heteren and surroundings

This route takes you through the Overbetuwe, a rural region enclosed by the Lower Rhine and the Waal. You can enjoy cycling in this quiet, sparsely populated area. Enjoy the view over the green polder landscape with fruit trees here and there. The region becomes completely magical when the fruit trees bloom in the spring.

The Gelders Narrow Gauge Museum
From Heteren you cycle along the floodplains of the Lower Rhine, where you can enjoy the panoramic view of the rippling water and the beautiful landscape. In the polder you will pass the Gelders Narrow Gauge Museum. Here you can learn everything about industrial narrow gauge. The museum is located in Steenbakkerij Randwijk, a national monument.

Medieval church
In the village of Herveld you will pass Molen De Vink, a standard mill from 1722. The mill is named after the family that has owned the mill for many generations. The Reformed Church in the village of Valburg is a lot older than the post mill. This church dates from the twelfth century. Here you can view murals made in the Middle Ages. 

Liberation Route
On this route you pass a listening point of the Liberation Route. The Liberation Route runs from Normandy via Nijmegen and Arnhem to Berlin and follows the path of the Allies during the liberation of the Second War. This listening point provides more information about the German counterattack during the pause in the fighting from September 26 to 29, 1944. The Germans managed to cross the Rhine unnoticed and thus overwhelm the British. An hour-long shooting battle ensued between the two sides, but eventually many German soldiers surrendered.
