Winterswijk and surroundings

During this tour you will cycle through the beautiful coulisse landscape that characterizes the Achterhoek. The landscape consists of a mix of fields, winding streams, hedgerows and forests. You will regularly see picturesque Saxon farms and stately mansions. In this area you will experience the typical vastness and tranquility of the Achterhoek. Ideal to switch off and relax. On your route you will pass through old church villages such as Zieuwent and Marienvelde. You will also cycle through Groenlo, the former fortified town that has a turbulent history. For example, Groenlo was besieged several times during the Eighty Years' War. It also came under fire during the Dutch War in 1672. Although most of the fortifications were demolished afterwards, you can still see bastions, moats and cannons in Groenlo. Groenlo and its surroundings form a Catholic enclave in the Achterhoek, because it has been influenced by the bishopric of Munster for centuries. Groenlo therefore has a Burgundian character.
