Through the dunes along Haarlem

The Dutch dune area is unsurpassed. A unique landscape has developed behind the wide sandy beaches of the Dutch coast. This route takes you through the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, a beautiful landscape consisting of various dune and forest areas. It is wonderful to cycle in the lee of the dunes. The surf sounds in the background, you have plenty of time to enjoy the panoramic view of the sea from the tops of the dunes. A dip in the water or a picnic on the beach is of course a must. After boarding, drive west immediately. You cycle into the Kennemer dunes, the largest sub-area within the national park. Here the wind moves the sand and the dunes drift. Yet you can also see different types of planted pines here and there. The human influence is also visible when you drive past the Vogelmeer, one of the dug lakes. On the east side of the dune area you mainly drive through coniferous forests. It is unbelievable how quiet this area is, while Haarlem is just a stone's throw away. You also drive past the park that has been created around the Brouwerskolk. Pure water was extracted from this chamber in the seventeenth century for brewing Haarlem beer.
