The IJsselmeer polders were originally only intended as agricultural land, to boost the agricultural industry. But after the Second World War, the Dutch population in Amsterdam grew so fast that more space was needed to house all these people. This is how Zuidweststad was born, the city that was called'Almere\\\' in the 1970s. Relatively young as it is, the city has its own unique atmosphere. Get on a bike to experience it for yourself!
Cycle to one of the youngest castles in the Netherlands: Almere Castle. Actually, the castle is more like a ruin, because it was never finished. The plans for the construction of the complex were made in 1999 and the first pile was driven in 2000, but due to a lack of financial resources, the project was halted in 2002. Nevertheless, the carcass in shell structure attracts many tourists and is partly because of this inhabited and maintained by anti-squatters. When completed, the castle will resemble the 13th-century Belgian Jemeppe Castle in Hargimont, which served as the basis for the design.
