Student city Nijmegen is the oldest city in the current Netherlands and celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 2005. It is also the largest city in the province of Gelderland, making it the tenth largest city in the Netherlands. Avid walkers may know Nijmegen from the Nijmegen Four Days Marches, the walking event where thousands of walkers walk dozens of kilometers through the area in four days. With a vibrant cultural life and many historic buildings, a visit to Nijmegen is a true experience. One of those historic buildings is the St. Anna Mill. Originally, the mill, built in 1819, stood as a polder mill in Alphen aan de Maas. Later he was placed on a belt in Nijmegen. During the Nijmegen Four Days Marches in 2002, the windmill ran for 96 consecutive hours, setting a record. The mill is used as a traditional bread bakery with flour trade. The next point of interest is M22: Marienburg Chapel. The chapel was built around 1430. At the time it was part of a monastery. In the following centuries, the building had different uses. It served as a hospital, theater, cotton mill, clothing department store, prison and art gallery, among other things. When the monastery was demolished in the 19th century, the chapel remained. In 2014, it is an iconic building on Mariënburgplein. The city also has exciting history lessons. R7: Roman Camp and R8: Roman Command Post zoom in on the customs of the Romans. Visit www.excitinghistory.nl for more historical places in Gelderland and the special stories and customs associated with these locations. Hotel Restaurant Rozenhof is located at the beginning and end of the walking tour. The spacious garden terrace looks very inviting after your walk. Take a seat and order a refreshing drink or something to eat. If you like that, you can of course also make more use of the hospitality and book a room in the beautiful hotel. You can then use our arrangement with route 181767. This way you can take a trip through the Nijmegen area the next day.
