The authentic Almelo

Almelo is the city with the coat of arms called 'the three drops'. The history of the city begins with Huis Almelo, which dates from 1236. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the house weaving mill became increasingly important and the invention of the steam engine encouraged factory production. The textile industry also received an extra boost with the construction of the Overijssels Canal and the construction of a railway line from Almelo to Salzbergen. Around 1900 there were many wealthy families in the region, who built beautiful houses and villas in various classical styles: Art Nouveau, Expressionism and Neo-Renaissance. The Bellinckhof is one of them. The neoclassical house was built on behalf of a textile manufacturer. The country house is surrounded by a geometric garden with rose beds. Further from the house, the natural elements were respected. Winding paths, groups of trees and water features are the highlights there. The Soaseler Möl is located near Saasveld. This ground sailor dates from 1870 and served as a flour mill. The mill was built on behalf of Augustinus Bootsveld, whose previous mill was destroyed during a storm.
