Tour Weerribben

This route shows you the most beautiful places in the Weerribben, part of the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Nature looks untouched here, but that is only an appearance. From the twelfth century onwards, this peat bog changed under the influence of humans. Dikes were constructed, reducing the influence of the Zuiderzee. Ditches were dug to drain the area and thus make it suitable for habitation. When it was discovered that dried peat can serve as fuel, peat extraction became the most important livelihood for centuries. Nowadays, many rare and special plant and animal species live in the Weerribben-Wieden National Park. Many species of water birds and insects, but also the otter, live on and in the water. In the clean water you will find fish such as roach, loach and pike. Cycling tip At junction 13, cycle straight ahead onto the Hoogeweg, you will then pass the characteristic dyers' houses and mills of the Weerribben. Be sure to stop at the bird watching hut for a beautiful view of the great diversity of birds in the area. In Kalenberg you can relax on a terrace and enjoy a snack and drink along the waterfront.
