A time travel through Wieringen and Wieringermeer

This cycle route takes you over the old, former island of Wieringen and over the old soil of the young Wieringermeerpolder. The very young and the very old go together on the route that combines archaeological sites from the Stone Age with those from the Second World War. Wieringen is not called the secret Wadden Island for nothing. The landscape does not resemble North Holland as we all know it. The rolling moraine landscape that was formed during the Ice Age has been an island for a long time. But the island's existence came to an end in 1924 when the Amsteldiep was closed and Wieringen was connected with a dike to the mainland of the Kop van Noord-Holland. The special remains from the Stone Age, valuable Viking treasures and the many archaeological mysteries of this area make for a surprising cycling route. During this real time travel you can become extensively acquainted with the history of Wieringen. The starting point of this route is the Viking Information Center on Wieringen, located next to VVV Den Oever. Here you will take the first step into the past and be taken back to the time of the Vikings. You continue your journey deep into the Wieringermeer polder and then turn back towards Wieringen. You then cycle through Stoe, one of the oldest villages on the island. In the tenth century it was even a significant village with 72 farms and its own church. You cycle along the Wadden Sea to the oldest beach in North Holland, geological monuments and the Wierdijk straight back to Den Oever.
