Description

This route takes you from Vaassen in Gelderland to the Veluwe. At the start of the route you walk through the agricultural area south of Vaassen. You pass through the hamlets of Wenum and Wiesel. Just outside Wenum you walk past the Windkorenmolen van Wenum, a thatched ground sailer. This mill is the third one on this site: its two predecessors burned down in 1908 and 1913. The current mill was not newly built, but moved from Baambrugge where it had served as a polder mill from 1840. The current owners are heirs of F. Vorderman, who bought the polder mill in 1913. Employees of the nearby Paleis Het Loo used to live in Wiesel. Every year the Oranjefeest is celebrated here in the first weekend of September to commemorate Queen Wilhelmina's birthday. In 2001, Wiesel was designated as a protected village view. From the village you walk into the woods that belong to the Koninklijke Houtvesterij Het Loo, the largest contiguous forest area in the Netherlands. You mainly walk here between deciduous trees, although pine trees also grow in some places. Long avenues with tall trees alternate with winding paths and suddenly open heaths. It is extremely quiet in this area. Especially on weekdays you run the risk of seeing a deer or deer darting between the greenery. It is a wonderful route to let your thoughts run free. The rhythmic stepping over the soft paths will relax you completely. On the outskirts of Vaassen you will pass the sixteenth-century Kasteel de Cannenburgh. This castle was built on the remains of an earlier, probably fourteenth-century castle. In 1543, the former ruin came into the hands of the famous warlord Maarten van Rossum. He gave the order to rebuild the castle, but died before it was completed. A little further on is the Cannenburger Molen, a water mill on the Hartense Molenbeek. The rights to this fourteenth-century mill belonged to Kasteel de Cannenburgh. After a fire, the originally largely wooden mill was rebuilt in stone in 1942. The mill houses a specialized mill for grinding vegetables, herbs, spices and buckwheat. The mill is not open to visitors.
