Description

Genk offers you a unique cycling environment in which cultural history and peaceful nature reserves alternate. The Limburg city owes much of its growth to mining. In the Waterschei district, for example, you can still see remnants of this industrial past. During the summer weekends, in the Mining Depot you can become acquainted with the machines and tools of the 'koempels', as the miners were also called. In the natural countryside you drive through the forests of the Bokrijk domain, known for its open-air museum. You cycle through the De Maten nature reserve, a stream valley with more than 30 ponds. At the point where the Genk Dorpsbeek and the Stiemerbeek meet, you drive past the Slagmolen. This mill dates from 1523 and was originally used to produce wool-based felt. In later centuries, flax, hemp and oil were also made here, and later the miller switched to grinding grain. The route starts and ends in the center of the city of Genk. You will find many opportunities here to enjoy your tour while enjoying a snack and a drink.
