Description
This route takes you along the towpath of two of the seven Kempen canals between the Maas and the Scheldt: the Dessel-Kwaadmechelen Canal and the Beverlo Canal in Belgium. Between these two waterways you drive through the Kempen country, an area where fields, meadows and nature reserves alternate. For example, you pass through the Gerheserbossen, a forest whose history goes back 10,000 years. You will mainly find sandy soils and dunes covered with pine forests here.
The most famous place on your route is Leopoldsburg. In 1835, King Leopold I built a barracks here as a defense against the Netherlands. In the city, you can still see that military history in various places, but you will also find a real Walk of Fame. Because relatively many BV\\\'ers - or Famous Flemish - grew up in Leopoldsburg, they got their own star in the sidewalk here.
