The Waterland region is a flat region with a beautiful openness, which is ideal for a bike ride. The low-lying peat meadow area, intersected with many ditches and canals, is protected against the encroaching water by the Waterlandse Zeedijk. Frequently heard dialects in Waterland are Volendams and Markens. The Fort near Edam deserves extra attention; one of the best preserved fortresses from the Defense Line of Amsterdam. The fort was included in the Unesco list of World Heritage in 1996. With Rederij Marken Express BV you can sail to the picturesque harbor towns on the Markermeer. With four ships there is always a place for you to sail. A trip on the Markermeer is an experience in itself, so don't miss this opportunity! The Marken peninsula, which is a protected cityscape, has an erratic history with the surrounding water and the inhabitants have always been fighting to protect home and hearth against the water.
