From Leusden through the Gelderse valley

Leusden is sandwiched between the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Gelderse Vallei. In and around this town you will find special landscapes and cultural-historical places. This route takes you through the region northeast of Leusden. You drive along the Valley Canal that formed an important part of the Grebbe Line. Many elements of this line of defense can still be found in the landscape, such as the 2500-metre-long Asschatterkeerkade. It is very worthwhile to get off your bike and take a walk on this retaining quay, which dates from 1745. The route then takes you through the rural area of the Gelderse Vallei. You drive here between the meadows where you can enjoy wide panoramas, meadow birds and special plants. Here and there you can still see a remnant of the blue grassland that used to be present in much greater numbers. Near Leusden you cycle through a beautiful new nature reserve, De Schammer.
