Wijk bij Duurstede, Utrecht, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 179967
Provided by: Groots Genieten
You cycle to the nice Wijk Bij Duurstede, where a Roman Castellum was located in Roman times. Country estates steal the show in this region. For example, you cycle to country estate Leeuwenburgh, built in 1657. The nearby Hindersteijn was even first mentioned around 1300. Groenestein Castle was probably built between 1377 and 1414, but was converted into a country house in the eighteenth century. Country estate Wickenburgh is a picture: in a park forest you will find a simple, white main building, an old gardener's house and a beautiful winding pond with dovecote. The coach house with coachman's house and a wash house have also been preserved. The route then takes you past Beverweerd Castle, which has been whitewashed and towering above the Werkhoven greenery for a few years now.
