Cycling across the heath near Ermelo

The surroundings of the picturesque village of Ermelo are a beautiful area. There is a lot of greenery in the oasis of peace, but there are also many meadows. Your cycle tour also takes you past ancient burial mounds. Centuries ago, people buried some of the dead in or under burial mounds, which are protected by the Monuments Act. Each of the mounds, where the dead were given their final resting place, is registered on the list of archaeological monuments. But that's not the only fun stop on the tour. The Aardhuis was built in 1861 on the Aardmansberg. It served for former military discussions and as a hunting chalet. Although it is now furnished as a visitor center, it still exudes that old atmosphere. You will find a period room with historic furniture, paintings, hunting weapons and antlers. You can also buy antlers shed by deer in the forests. A nice souvenir of this day outdoors.

Blowing sand areas and sandy paths. The Elspeetse Heide is a remnant of a gigantic heathland plain that stretched across this part of the Veluwe. Heath sheep are inextricably linked to this beautiful piece of nature, the animals have traditionally grazed the Elspeetse Heide. On the edge of Elspeet you can visit a sheepfold where the animals are housed.
