Along and on the Waaldijk near Zaltbommel

It is a tough walk from Zaltbommel to Zuillichem, but those who persevere will be rewarded with a great walk that will give you a lot of satisfaction. Zaltbommel is a fortified town that is more than a thousand years old, located on the Waal and named after the influence of the salt water on the land. Zaltbommel means "salty orchard" and was originally called Bommel. The town is still called that by its own inhabitants. The first mention of Zaltbommel dates back to the year 850. In the course of the thirteenth century, "Bomela", as Zaltbommel was called a long time ago, grew into an important trading town. In the fifteenth century, the town joined the Hanseatic League. You walk along the Waaldijk, with a great view over the water. Once you arrive in Zuillichem, you will visit the De Hoop mill. The corn mill was built in 1863. The current windmill is the third mill on this site and is painted white. The lower two floors of the windmill are inhabited. The mill generally operates on Saturdays and can be visited then. The mill is used to grind grain on a voluntary basis.
