Go for a walk on the Hoog Oorsprong estate. A hilly landscape, complete with forests, fields and water features, stretches out on the Arnhem moraine. On a relatively small surface you will find spectacular height differences, which provide an adventurous experience. Special mosses and mushrooms grow in De Oorsprong, because many old trees adorn the estate. Many mushrooms live in symbiosis with the trees, such as the violet-green russula and the elven umbel. The Italian road, which was built in 1848, is also beautiful. The beeches were already there, the road has been laid around them. De Doorwerth Castle is also nearby.
After about five kilometers you will arrive there. De Doorwerth is a water castle that is first mentioned in writing in 1260. The castle, which was fully restored in 2004, now houses two museums, but the building also serves as a wedding location. The oldest robinia in the Netherlands is located in the courtyard. This tree was planted in 1579 and is therefore more than 500 years old!
At Heveadorp you pass the archaeological monument M35: Hunenschans. The site is an early medieval fortification with an earthen wall and moat. It is a beautiful vantage point to Arnhem and Nijmegen, so bring your camera!
The route also passes strategic points that played an important role in the liberation from World War II. At the Westerbouwing you will pass listening key L21: Retreat of the 1st British Airborne Division, where you can listen to the tactical German response that the Allied troops received when they wanted to take the bridges of Arnhem. This made the liberation more difficult and the airborne division had to withdraw.
Also L40: The friendship band is such a listening point, which you pass by after you have visited the Airborne Museum. Here two gliders crossed paths and one of the pilots was seriously injured. Symbolically, a bracelet is cut in half, promising to see each other again after the war. These stories and your visit to the museum make you realize that it is not so obvious that you can walk through nature in freedom.
This impressive walking tour starts and ends at B&B De Oude Herbergh. Old-fashioned hospitality and a central location in the wooded area near Arnhem make a stay very attractive. Of course coffee, tea, lunch or a nice dinner are provided. A breakfast after a stay is also possible. Then you can then go on the road again to also discover walking tour 179818.
