Description

On the left bank of the Maas, opposite Roosteren, you will find the beautiful city of Maaseik. The municipality of Maaseik is part of the Limburg Maasland. The Maasland consists of the Maas valley, which is approximately four kilometers wide, and the Maasterranes. In addition to the Maas, you will find two streams in the municipality, the Bosbeek and the Zanderbeek.

Historic Maaseik
The planned street pattern from the time of the foundation of Maaseik is still clearly recognizable. The city walls used to have to make way for Burgemeester Philipslaan. When this road was rebuilt, the foundations of the Eikerpoort were discovered. The foundations of the count's castle have been uncovered in the parking garage under Kolonel Aertsplein. You can still admire it here.

Two beautiful windmills
You will cover the most kilometers in Belgium on this route, but the most beautiful sights can be found on the Dutch part of this route. In Stramproy you will pass two beautiful windmills. The first is called'Nijverheid\\\', but is also called the Mill of Nijs. A little further on you cycle past the St. Jansmolen, a see-saw mill from 1783. In 1804 the mill was moved to its current location. The mill milled grain on a professional basis until 1978.

Mill de Nijverheid
Molen de Nijverheid is a round stone mill that was built in 1903. In 1921 there was a new owner named Jacques Nijs. He renovated the mill and the building was named after him. The flour mill was decommissioned around 1960 and due to its standstill it slowly began to fall into disrepair. Nowadays, De Nijverheid grinds grain again on a voluntary basis with two pairs of millstones.
