Description
The city centre of Kortrijk is one of the oldest cities in Belgium. Around the year zero, the city of "Cortoriacum" was founded, a residential area that was founded by the Romans as a precursor to the current city. In the Middle Ages, the flax and cloth industry flourished as never before in Kortrijk. This gave the city an enormous economic boost.
These industries remained large in Kortrijk, also in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In 2013, the textile industry is still an important center, next to a flourishing knowledge industry that is fed by a university and several colleges.
In the heart of Kortrijk you will find the Groeninge Abbey, where Toeristisch Kortrijk, the Regional Visitor Centre for Kortrijk and the Leiestreek, and Kortrijk 1302 have their branches. This is where the history of Kortrijk comes together. The abbey itself dates from 1597.
