Walking through the Ballerswal nature reserve

On to the woods
The starting point of this route is a bit outside Eeserveen. From here you walk through the hamlet to the forests of the Ballerswal. This nature reserve is part of Boswachterij Odoorn, which is about 1800 hectares in total. When it was built around 1914, a lot of coniferous trees were planted and later deciduous trees were planted here and there to reduce the risk of a forest fire. In 1972 the forest suffered serious damage during a storm and part of it has subsequently been rejuvenated, because it had to be replanted. Initially, the forest was intended for wood production, but in recent years the forest has increasingly been used as a nature and recreation area.

Picnic in the sculpture garden
