Description

This route takes you through Alkmaar and along the Eilandspolder. First, you'll cycle along the green outskirts of Heiloo. You'll pass the Pulpit, an old moraine. Legend has it that the monk Willibrord preached here centuries ago to spread Christianity. In the cheese town of Alkmaar, you'll enjoy the historic atmosphere thanks to the many old buildings. Along the Hoornse Vaart canal, you'll pass four monumental windmills dating from 1630. On your right, you'll look out over the Oudorperhout, a unique meadow in the heart of the city. You'll cycle through Stompetoren, a village named after its church tower. From the path, you'll have a beautiful view of the Eilandspolder. You'll cycle through Groot-Schermer and Graft, and along the Alkmaardermeer lake, you'll return to Egmond Abbey.
