Description
The area around Hoogeveen used to consist of a large peat area with a few stray farms here and there. From about 1800 to the end of the 19th century, a lot of peat was extracted in this area and then it developed into the city of Hoogeveen with beautiful green rural areas. This area is perfect for a relaxing bike ride.
From here you cycle through the countryside to Hollandscheveld and Noordscheschut. Here you will find special straight plots with 90 degree angles. These rectilinear areas were created after peat excavations. From Noordscheschut you cycle further to Tiendeveen, passing Grand Café - Hotel Martensplek. Here you can take a well-deserved break with a snack and a drink. From here you can also follow route 178512, 115916 and 542928. Then you cycle back to the starting point in Hoogeveen.
Mill De Zwaluw
In Hoogeveen you can take a look at the De Zwaluw windmill. This octagonal mill was built in 1834 as a replacement for an older mill. With this mill, grain is still milled on a professional basis, unlike most mills in the Netherlands that are kept running by volunteers.

Mill De Zwaluw is not the only beautiful sight in Hoogeveen. You can also take a look at the Grote Kerk of Hoogeveen, the Vincent van Gogh house where Van Gogh stayed for a few weeks in 1883 and many more special places. Right in the center you will find the oldest houses in Hoogeveen, including the former drugstore from 1703.
