Description
Between the National Park Drents-Friese Wold and the National Landscape Drentsche Aa you will find a vast peat area full of ancient ash villages. This route takes you through various villages and past special sights on the peat bogs around Norg.
A break in Norg
The starting point of this route is near Appelscha. From here you set course through the vast landscape to Norg. On the way you will pass a watchtower. Climb this tower and enjoy a beautiful panorama over the surrounding nature reserve. In Norg you will also find the windmills De Hoop and windmill Noordenveld. Mill De Hoop was built in 1857 and mill Noordenveld dates from 1878. Both mills are still used by volunteer millers.
Back to Appelscha
From Norg you cycle back to Appelscha via Steenbergen. On the way you pass an old bell tower with a hipped roof. This bell was cast in the year 1435.
The Prison Museum
At Veenhuizen you can visit the Prison Museum. This museum is located in an old forced asylum that was built in 1823 in Veenhuizen as a shelter for beggars and vagrants. Nowadays you can learn more about everything related to crime and punishment in this building.
