Description

Via the park on the Koumenberg you walk to Hoensbroek Castle. Here you walk over the slag heap of the former Oranje Nassau III mine. The mines in the area are all closed now, but the working-class neighborhoods built for the miners can still be seen. Hoensbroek Castle is one of the largest castles in the Netherlands. Already around 1225 there was a motte on this spot. Due to its strategic location on the trade routes to Maastricht, Aachen and Cologne, this original castle developed into the largest fortress between the Maas and the Rhine. Worth a visit, because this enormous castle museum is a true experience. You can wander through more than forty castle rooms!
