The Hogedijk route is a marked walk along the ring dike of De Beemster. The unpaved parts of the Beemsterringdijk are often bumpy or muddy. At many points you have to climb over fences with the help of stiles. The route is paved in places (bicycle path or road), but the main part is on the grass at the top of the dike. In the spring it is teeming with meadow birds, such as black-tailed godwits, redshanks and lapwings. In order to allow the meadow birds to breed in peace, no cows graze in the spring. Mowing only takes place after mid-June, when the chicks of the meadow birds can fly. The route is marked with blue stickers. The alternative options are indicated with yellow stickers.
