Description
Along the Beemsterringvaart
The starting point of this route is just outside Oudendijk. From here you walk over the dike along the Beemsterringvaart to Beets and Schardam. You can enjoy a beautiful view over the vast polders. All kinds of meadow birds and other birds that love the watery landscape are found here. Keep your eyes open and discover reed birds such as the reed warbler, reed warbler, reed bunting and many more bird species. In Schardam you will find several locks that have been important since the end of the Middle Ages to maintain the water level in this area. These used to be wooden locks, but later this was replaced with stone.
Oudendijk
From Schardam you walk a bit along the Markermeer. Then you walk back to Oudendijk. This village originated near an old dike. The dike was later raised and improved to better protect the area against the water.
Time to hit the road
This entire route takes you over dikes. So you don't have to trudge through swampy polders. The route is marked with blue stickers with the name of the route and an icon on it. This way you can easily follow the route. Alternative options are indicated with yellow stickers.
Height Profile
In Laag Holland are the rustic villages of yesteryear. While cycling you will find Dutch history in the beautiful straight polder lines and the protected city and village views. Low Holland is a national landscape. The Defense Line of Amsterdam and the Beemster have been placed on the World Heritage list by UNESCO.
