The Kijk over de Kogenroute is a marked circular walk over the dikes around the Kleine Koog, the Groote Koog and the Rietkoog. Here you can see the traces of various dike breaches. Furthermore, the wet Oosterkoog is an interesting nature reserve where sometimes hundreds of curlews gather in the winter. When spring arrives, the first black-tailed godwits can be seen here very quickly. Black-tailed godwits particularly seek out these types of terrain when they return from warmer regions in the south. Also note the shell banks on the low quay. Beach gapers and cockles still wash up here and there, even though these saltwater shells became extinct shortly after the Zuiderzee was closed off (1932). You can also find the zebra mussel, which is now common in the Markermeer.

Walking during the breeding season
This entire walk can be done over grass dikes. There is also often a paved road or cycle path to walk over if you prefer. During the breeding season, which runs from 15 March to 15 June, parts of the route are closed to avoid disturbing the animals during breeding. Alternative yellow route markings will then show you the way.
