Birds at the Oosterkoog
The Kijk over de Kogenroute is a marked circular walk on the dikes around the Kleine Koog, the Groote Koog and the Rietkoog. Here you can see the traces of various dike breaches. Furthermore, the wet Oosterkoog is an interesting nature reserve where hundreds of curlews sometimes gather in winter. When spring arrives, the first black-tailed godwits can soon be seen here. Black-tailed godwits particularly seek out these types of terrain when they return from warmer regions in the south. Also note the shell banks on the low quay. Beach gapers and cockles still wash up here and there, even though these saltwater shells became extinct shortly after the closure of the Zuiderzee (1932). You can also find the zebra mussel, which is now common in the Markermeer.

Walking in the breeding season
This entire walk can be completed on grass dikes. There is also often a paved road or cycle path to walk on if you prefer. During the breeding season, which runs from March 15 to June 15, parts of the route are closed in order not to disturb the animals while they are breeding. Alternative yellow route markings will then show you the way.
